Unintentional nuclear disarmament: The Pentagon wants to refurbish Trident warheads, but nobody remembers how they were built.
The U.S. National Nuclear Security Administration recently postponed its crucial program to rejuvenate quarter-century-old Trident missile warheads because no one can remember how to make a key component of the weapons (codenamed "Fogbank"), according to a March 2 report of the Government Accountability Office. The GAO found that, despite concern over the bombs' safety and reliability, NNSA could not replicate the manufacturing process because all knowledgeable personnel have left the agency and no written records were kept. Said one commentator, "This is like James Bond destroying his instructions as soon as he's read them." [Sunday Herald (Glasgow), 3-7-09]

Iraq: US soldier charged in fellow soldier's death
BAGHDAD – The U.S. military says an American soldier has been charged with involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of a fellow soldier in northern Iraq.
The military says Sgt. Miguel A. Vegaquinones also was charged Wednesday with making a false official statement in Pfc. Sean P. McCune's death.
Thursday's announcement says "the apparent cause of death was a negligent discharge from Vegaquinones' weapon" after the men finished guard duty Jan. 11 in Samarra.
Vegaquinones is assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division. The military says he has temporarily been moved to brigade headquarters near Tikrit for the proceedings.
Involuntary manslaughter carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence.

It's sad that Negligent Discharges happen, they are a result of poor training, indiscipline and a lackadaisical attitude towards weapons handling. But to charge the guy with manslaughter? Isn't that a little harsh? I'd like to know more details on this one.

Blown-away Chihuahua reunited with owners
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Tinker Bell has been reunited with her owners after a 70-mph gust of wind picked up the six-pound Chihuahua and tossed her out of sight. Dorothy and Lavern Utley credit a pet psychic for guiding them on Monday to a wooded area nearly a mile from where 8-month-old Tinker Bell had been last seen. The brown long-haired dog was dirty and hungry but otherwise OK.
The Utleys, of Rochester, had set up an outdoor display Saturday at a flea market in Waterford Township, 25 miles northwest of Detroit. Tinker Bell was standing on their platform trailer when she was swept away.
Dorothy Utley tells The Detroit News that her cherished pet "just went wild" upon seeing her.

Radio Shack employee punches customer
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – A Radio Shack employee faces disorderly conduct and battery charges for punching a customer. Police said the customer was trying to return an item Sunday, but the employee wouldn't let him. The customer then asked to talk to a manager.
That's when the 52-year-old male employee began punching the man. A bystander called 911.
The employee is due in court May 19.
